We use food grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE). Mixing it with feeds, nesting areas and baby chicks bedding helps control internal and external parasites, such as worms, lice and mites. DE also helps to keep various pests and insects under control. Click Earthworks Health Products for more information on DE and to purchase online.

We start out at mixing in about one part "Rooster Booster" with three parts chick crumbles when they are about two months old, gradually increasing the "Rooster Booster" and decreasing the chick crumbles. By the time they reach about four months old they are getting all "Rooster Booster". We also mix diatomaceous earth in with the "Rooster Booster" at the same ratio of fifty to one. We also make crushed oyster shell and 16% protein layer crumbles available starting around the age of  four months. They love to eat table scraps, especially vegetables and greens.

We feed our birds the VetRx Tonic Feeder for Breeding with Red Cell. This helps keep our breeding birds healthy for maximum production of fertile hatching eggs that hatch strong healthy chicks. The instructions enclosed inside the box with a 2 ounce bottle of VetRx on how to make this tonic is this:

"Keep three quarts of laying mash indoors for a few hours until it reaches room temperature. Warm a bottle of VetRx. Pour entire bottle into mash and mix well by rubbing mash between hands. Let stand in warm room overnight. Next day, put this treated mash in a container with a tight lid and let stand for about two weeks. Mix one tablespoon of treated mash, once daily, in feed for every twenty birds. If feeding ten birds or less, one teaspoon is enough. Be sure to stir treated mash thoroughly into feed".

On Friday nights and Tuesday nights we:

1. Mix thoroughly 3 cups dry 28% protein puppy food w/1 teaspoon VetRx Tonic for Breeding in a 45 ounce margerine container.

2. Put 3 oz buttermilk or yogurt in a 16 oz jar.

3. Add 2 cc Red Cell.

4. Add 12 oz warm water, put lid on and shake it up good.

5. Add this liquid to the dry puppy food & VetRx mixture in the margerine container and put the lid on. Let soak overnight, then feed group of 6 - 8 birds first thing in the morning.

Since we have seperate breeding pens that average 6 - 8 birds (1 roo 5-7 hens), we mix individual portions in these plastic margerine (Country Crock) containers for each group to be sure they get the correct and equal portions and precise dosages of VetRx and Red Cell. It is especially important that the birds get the correct dosage of Red Cell because it contains selenium. This might sound like a lot of trouble but the results we get are worth it. We don't have more birds than we can take very well care of.

Chicks that are just hatched get Red Cell mixed in their drinking water at 1 cc per gallon and they are shipped at one day old with GroGel Plus B to help sustain them during the shipment process. Both the Red Cell and the GroGel Plus B  gets baby chicks off to a good start while helping boost their immune system.

By following the above nutritional program the best we can, our birds have a good appetite so they eat well, grow fast, have plenty of vigor, have good weight, stay healthy and strong, and they grow to be very big with beautiful lustrous feathering. Our breeders have excellent fertility and reproduce strong and healthy chicks that thrive.
